Kenaitze Tribal Member Emilee Wilson’s artwork has been chosen to represent this year’s Opening of the Net celebration on June 1. Members of the Tribal Council and the Hunting, Fishing and Gathering Commission chose Wilson’s work after reviewing more than a dozen submissions from Kenaitze and Salamatof Tribal Members. Her artwork will be featured on promotional materials and merchandise for the annual gathering.
“I was not expecting to win,” Wilson said. “It’s very exciting, though.”
“I was hoping to convey the partnership we have with Salamatof and to welcome all Tribal Members,” she said of her design.
Wilson received a $500 cash prize for her work.
Artists were asked to include the fish used in Kenaitze’s Tribal Seal and the kayak used in Salamatof’s Tribal Seal. They were asked to create designs that reflect the cultural significance, unity and spirit of the Opening of the Net.
